On KCRW’s “Scheer Intelligence,” Truthdig Editor in Chief Robert Scheer speaks with veteran Hollywood producer Janet Yang about how her Chinese heritage interacted with her filmmaking career.

Yang, who worked with Steven Spielberg and Oliver Stone and produced “Empire of the Sun,” “The People vs. Larry Flynt” and “The Joy Luck Club,” visited China as a young adult after growing up in New York. She tells Scheer about the contradictions she sees in the Chinese people and the tension in the country between socialism and capitalism.

Yang also tells of her struggle in the early 1990s to produce “The Joy Luck Club,” about relationships between Chinese-American women and their immigrant mothers, and why she thinks the film couldn’t be made today.
